How
does it work?
Your gift is placed in an investment fund that continues to
grow while part of the earnings are used to sustain and enhance
library services and programs.
Why is it necessary?
Programs such as Youth and Kids Services (YAKS), the Dragonfly
Project, and humanities events are currently funded by short-term
gifts and grants, not by Borough funds. With the Library Legacy
Fund, we can continue to offer programs like these and ensure
that free access to lifelong learning is available for generations.
Can I direct how my donation is spent?
Yes. While your gift will have the greatest impact in the
Library Legacy fund, gifts may be designated to be used for
children’s services, technology-related programs or
collection development.
Will the principal be spent?
No. Your gift will grow in perpetuity.
Where are the gifts invested?
The Legacy Fund is invested with the Alaska Community Foundation
(ACF). ACF receives contributions from a broad range of Alaskan
individuals, private foundations, and nonprofit organizations
and then invests the funds with private managers. In addition,
the Friends of the Library Finance Committee will monitor
the overall success of the Legacy Fund investments.
How will the monies be spent?
The earnings will be reviewed each year and a certain amount
set aside to fund requests from library staff and board members.
The FHBPL board members authorize the expenditures and will
focus on youth services, technology-related programs, and
collection development.

 A
Legacy to Treasure
When
the Haines Women’s Club started the Library in an 8’
x 8’ shed, they began a strong tradition of meeting community
needs. Since that beginning in 1928, members of the community have
worked together, volunteering at the desk, serving on the Library
Board and the Friends’ Board, organizing programs, participating
in fundraising and a multitude of other tasks to assist the library
staff in assuring that the library offered the best possible services
to residents and visitors.
In 1987 the Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library received
nonprofit status and took on the role of fundraising to enhance
and support library services. Their efforts have increased programming
and resulted in a beautiful building that many say is their “home
away from home.”
Today the Haines Borough Public Library serves as more than a public
facility offering free access to information. It is a community
gathering place where people of all ages come together to participate
in lifelong learning programs, attend movies and concerts, schedule
meetings and events, and explore and exchange ideas.
A
Legacy to Uphold
Circulation
has more than doubled since moving into the new building in 2003,
an increase that has been going on since the library opened its
doors over a repeating trend in the library’s history. The
2006 Summer Reading Program set a record 6,000+ children attending
in 8 weeks. The Dragonfly Project continues to receive national
recognition for its innovation. This is a tremendous achievement
for our community, but we need your help to uphold and perpetuate
excellent services and programs for generations to come.
“My
mother always taught me that you may not be able to change the world,
but you can change the part of the world you live in. Our children
always loved the library so I felt that, not only would the endowment
act as a living memorial, but would also make Haines a better place
to live.”

Carol Waldo
A
Legacy to Endow
Currently
the library and its programs are funded by a number of sources,
property taxes collected by the Borough, grants from federal and
state agencies, donations raised by the Friends of the Haines Borough
Public Library, and the Carol Waldo Fund. As we look ahead, all
these funding sources may not be available or may cut back the amount
of funding. Therefore, to ensure that the Library continues to provide
programs that address the needs of our community, the Friends are
creating the Library Legacy Fund.
A
Library Legacy
It’s
been six years since Carol Waldo endowed the Library with a $30,000
fund for the Summer Reading Program. Every year since it began this
endowment has paid up to $2,500 towards the Summer Reading Program.
This fund has proven to be an excellent model for sustaining and
developing programs, and, according to Carol, “has turned
out way beyond our wildest dreams.”
The Library Legacy Fund plans to follow in its footsteps and offering
others the opportunity to follow in Carol’s.
