“Attending events at the library always gives us a chance to meet people in the community that we may not see on a regular basis. The library is a safe place to form friendships. The library plays a key role in our everyday lives.”

The library offers a wide variety of materials for all ages:
The library offers free access to the Internet. We also offer access to Microsoft Office programs on several workstation computers. Five laptop computers with wireless capability are available for residents to use in the library facility. Multimedia stations with educational software for children are also available.
Thanks to funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Chilkoot Indian Association Tribal Government, and the Haines Borough School District. Accelerated Reader is available for children in grades K-8.
Materials, which are not owned by any of the libraries in Haines, may be requested through interlibrary loan. Requests for specific titles, authors or subjects may be submitted at the library, over the phone or via email. ILL requests are routed via mail to Alaskan libraries first and then to libraries in the Pacific Northwest. The cost for this service is $1.00 per material to cover postage cost recovery. Expect at least a 2 to 4 week wait depending on which library owns the book.
The library sells used books on a regular basis and the Friends of the Library have several large used book sales throughout the year. Hardcover books are $1.00 to $3.00 and paperbacks $1.00 unless they are in excellent condition then the price is slightly higher. Donations of used books for these sales are welcome.
Home delivery of materials is available within the city or the adjacent areas if you are homebound. Board members volunteer to deliver the materials once a week. Interested patrons should call 766-2545 or e-mail us with your requests. If you can't come to us, let us come to you!
Thanks to the Friends of the Library, a typewriter is available.
A photocopier is available for public use. Copies are 25 cents per page. Copyright law must be followed.
The library owns several collections on microfiche. Back issues of Haines and Skagway newspapers are available on microfilm at the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center.
A variety of tax forms for the current and two previous years are kept on file. These become available as the IRS sends them to us. IRS publications are also available. You can also download forms at irs.gov
Materials pertaining to current "local issues" are kept for an indefinite time, depending on the level of interest in the community and the currency of the issue. Documents from government agencies, local agencies and non-profits are available.
The meeting rooms may be reserved during scheduled library hours for use by educational, civic, cultural and governmental groups when no admission charge is made. There is no fee. Rental of the meeting room(s) after hours is also now available. The space must be reserved in advance by contacting the library staff at 766-2545. Call for more details.
